چکیده

Skins are used to manufacture leather, casings and gelatine, soluble collagen for cosmetic purposes as well as medical devices like hemostyptic sponges, threads, films and matrices for cell culture. All of these materials are manufactured from the same biological polymer collagen. However, the skin as tissue is a natural product, a complex system far from being homogenious compared to most industrial products. Already its basic structure the collagen triple helix consists of different protein chains, there are different collagen types, the protein chains are naturally crosslinked, varying with sex, age and species, the collagen fibrils and fibre bundles vary in form, length, thickness and fiber angle over the crossection of the skin and over its area. Nevertheless, some processing steps are common for most final materials as unhairing, liming, crosslinking, and drying. But order and intensity of these steps, the addition of some further processing stages as well as small amounts of additives are of utmost importance for the proerties of the final materials. The lecture will give an overview on the state of the art of collagen processing and some resulting materials. The strategies to adjust final properties will be discussed with regard to known changes of the collagen structure, and open questions upon structure changes during processing will be touched.

Research Article: Isolation, characterization and biocompatibility evaluation of collagen from Thunnus tonggol skin

Acid-soluble collagen could be isolated from fish skin using acetic acid. In recent years, much attention has been paid to collagen from marine sources, mainly arising from the fact that there is no risk of contagious diseases. Moreover, by processing the fish, significant amounts of waste materials are produced which can be considered as a substitute for these collagen sources. Thunnus tonggol...

Transforming Growth Factor-β1 Preserves Bovine Nasal Cartilage against Degradation Induced by Interleukin-1α in Explant Culture

Background and Aims: Chondrocytes and their differentiation play a central role in joint diseases. Effect of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 on chondrocyte characteristics and differentiation is not clearly understood. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of TGF-β1 on tissue characteristics and morphology of chondrocytes against degradation induced by interleuk...

Evaluating the effect of pH on mechanical strength and cell compatibility of nanostructured collagen hydrogel by the plastic compression method

Objective(s): One of the main constraints of collagen hydrogel scaffolds for using in tissue engineering is mechanical weakness. Plastic compression (PC) is a physical method to overcome the mechanical limitation of collagen hydrogel. Materials and Methods: In this study, the effects of pH on mechanical and biological properties of PC hydrogels were investigated. Collagen hydrogels were fabrica...

Study of Basement Membrane Type IV Collagen Appearance in the Brain Choroids Plexus of Mouse Fetuses

Introduction & Objective: The brain choroids plexus (BCP) plays an important role in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production, but its characterization is still incomplete. Collagen type IV, is one of the most important proteins of basement membrane (BM) and extracellular matrix (ECM) of BCP. In the present study we investigated the differential period of type IV collagen in basement membrane...

Water Absorption of Chitosan, Collagen and Chitosan/Collagen Blend Membranes Exposed to Gamma-ray Irradiation

TThis study investigated the water absorption of chitosan, collagen, and chitosan/collagen blend membranes exposed to gamma-ray irradiation. These membranes were produced via the solvent evaporation method. All membranes then underwent irradiation at 15 or 25 kGy gamma-ray doses, while membranes without irradiation were used as controls. After immersing the membranes in distilled water for up t...
